A Comparison of Operative Methods in Esophageal Cancer

Abstract
For patients with carcinoma of the esophagus, it is generally conceded that resection offers the best palliation. The preferred approach to resection varies with the surgeon. Recently, among 42 patients who underwent resection for carcinoma of
the
esophagus, 34 were selected for comparison between transhiatal approach and McKeown procedure. In the transhiatal group, ICU and Hospital stay are shorter than McKeown procedure. The incidence of operative mortality and postoperative
complications
were
similar in both groups. As this study, transhiatal esophagectomy provided safe palliation for esophageal cancer with a low perioperative mortality for the dustal esophageal cancer and good procedure for early cancer of esophagus. But we have to
wait
long-term survival data for comparison.
